This Oversized UV Sanitizer Is the Cheapest It's Ever Been For Amazon Prime Day

From Good Housekeeping

  • Amazon Prime Day shoppers can score a Coral UV Sanitizer at its cheapest price ever, $119.

  • The sale includes an extra $30 coupon that stacks on top of the Prime Day discount.

  • UV light can work to remove pesky germs on items that can be disinfected by hand, and can supplement your cleaning efforts during the pandemic.

Social distancing is a top priority during the coronavirus pandemic, but keeping your family's home free of icky germs is also top of the list for most us. For Amazon Prime Day there are plenty of deals on cleaning appliances that can help us keep our homes spick and span — and that includes ultraviolet (UV) light sanitizers, like those in the popular PhoneSoap line, that are designed to keep the delicate glass on your phone free of germs. But if you have a large family, you may want to check out the Coral UV Sanitizer, a new product that's much larger in scale than a standard phone sanitizer. And here's the good news: This oversized, supercharged UV sanitizer is on deep discount for Prime Day. Shoppers can save $50 off the final price at checkout.

The product's manufacturers claim that the UV-C light within the box can remove 99.9% of germs within 10 minutes, and say they have independently tested the product against strains of diseases like E. coli and salmonella. But unlike other UV sanitizers on the market now, this gadget also comes equipped with a built-in dryer that filters interior air through an embedded HEPA filter. Settings range between 40 and 70 minute sessions, but it allows you to place damp items inside (think: baby bottles, blankets, even soft toys) and come out dry. Our editors had a chance to review one of Coral UV's sanitizers, and found that the box could hold multiple items for easier cleaning due to a two-level rack system. You can place a wallet and keys in the upper rack, while putting a phone, tablet, laptop, water bottles or any other bulk items in the bottom rack.

Normally sold for $170 at most retailers, Coral UV is offering the sanitizer for 20% off during Amazon Prime Day. On top of that, Amazon is also offering an additional coupon on top of the Prime Day discount, a $30 value, making the final price on this tool just $119.99 (with free shipping!).

Of course, using UV light to target stubborn germs isn't a replacement for the effectiveness of disinfecting or washing items by hand, or more importantly, washing your own hands after you've been outside. Some scientists maintain that UV light-equipped devices may not entirely kill all of the germs on our items; for example, if you open the lid during a timed session, the Coral UV Sanitizer automatically shuts off, possibly leaving viable germs still on your items.

Many leading health experts, like the officials at the Mayo Clinic, have long touted the benefits of using UV exposure to remove pesky germs on surfaces like our phones or kitchen counters and UV light can be lethal to nearly all bacteria and viruses. That said, there's also the potential for harm when it comes to human exposure, since UV light's photons damage and alter DNA at its core, as reported by Alex Berezow, Ph.D. for the American Council on Science and Health. It's also worth noting that while most infectious germs can't survive UV exposure for an extended period of time, there hasn't been enough direct UV-related research conducted on SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that can lead to a COVID-19 diagnosis) to say anything for certain about its effectiveness against it. Health officials, however, have already established that UV light can kill viruses like the flu.

That said, the Coral UV Sanitizer will be useful to you long after the pandemic is over. It's the perfect gift for any neat freak, and a sanitizer may make deep cleaning items that you can't cover in bleach that much easier. A sale on peace of mind is not one to miss!
