The complete NYFW trend guide for fall 2018
New York Fashion Week had its share of memorable moments this season: Telfar staged a game-changing concert in lieu of a traditional runway, Milly made a powerful statement on equality, Hot Cheetos surprisingly had a big cameo, a robot and a spaceship were also present. And this season might also have had its most inclusive model casts yet.
Gender-fluid models, all-black casts, transgender models, cancer survivors, curvy models, and more were all represented on the runway. Although this inclusivity was not seen across the board, it was a big step in the right direction for an industry that has long struggled with diversity.
In terms of the fashion, however, designers continued to bring their A-game despite past big-league designers leaving New York for fashion weeks in Europe. This season, designers weren’t afraid to embrace bold colors, vibrant prints, and ’80s glamour, as well as a few off-kilter looks.

Safety orange was a major trend this season. At Calvin Klein, Raf Simons was inspired by the 1995 film Safe, whose main female lead, Julianne Moore, contracts multiple chemical sensitivity, an illness that causes her to become allergic to her own life. This causes Moore’s character to wear rigorous protective clothing similar to a firefighter’s bunker gear, such as a balaclava, gloves and thigh-high boots. This is reflected in Simons’s collection as well, which includes safety orange-colored apparel, boots, and coats with reflective tape details. Safety orange was spotted not only at Calvin Klein but also throughout NYFW at Tibi, Bottega Veneta, and Colovos, to name a few. This season, think “safety first,” as orange will be the top trending color.

Iridescent jackets, coats, and dresses reigned over the runways. Spotted at Sies Marjan, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Christian Siriano, and Area, this psychedelic color is invading fall fashion in a powerful way. Wearing any iridescent clothing piece is a bold call and will surely make a statement wherever you go. Are you ready to be in the spotlight?

NYFW designers have spoken, and pantsuits are here to stay. As popularized by Hillary Clinton during her presidential campaign, as well as by actresses like Evan Rachel Wood, Charlize Theron, and Nicole Kidman, who opted for pantsuits instead of traditional gowns on the red carpet, the pantsuit continues to show its power throughout politics, Hollywood, and fashion. Whether you prefer a pantsuit with a boxy blazer, a wide legged trouser, or one in a bright shade like fuchsia, there are limitless options to choose from this season.

Even though a growing number of fashion designers are stepping away from fur, animal prints are now front and center for fall. Tom Ford created an ode to the ’80s in his fall fashion collection featuring a myriad of leopard suits in bright shades, such as neon green and orange. R13 embraced the same, except ditching the stilettos with the look for Ugg platform heels. While at Bottega Veneta and Zadig & Voltaire, both brands featured tiger-printed coats, rompers, and booties. Just because fur is on its way out doesn’t mean animals can’t still be points of inspiration.

Bright tights in glitter, as well as pastel shades like pink and lavender, were spotted across the runways at Ulla Johnson, Jeremy Scott, and Saks Potts. The animal-print craze seen at Tom Ford continues to its hosiery, seen above on model Joan Smalls. Whether your style is a bit futuristic like Scott’s, bohemian like Ulla’s, refined and classic like Saks Potts, or sexy and glamorous like Ford’s, tights might be the easiest way to transform any look this fall without having to spend a fortune. Everyone’s favorite social media sparkle filter, KiraKira, is now officially a fashion week trend. Bright, shiny silver sparkles were seen gleaming throughout the fashion runways awaiting their perfect Instagrammable moment. At Oscar de la Renta, models wore showstopping gowns, including one dress with long strands of silver sequins lining the entirety of the dress. Tom Ford also debuted another pantsuit made of silver sequins, while Alexander Wang created a silver sequin minidress as part of his Matrix meets CEO collection. Needless to say, be sure to stock up on plenty of silver sparkles and sequins this fall.
