At the Tony Awards last night, months after a mass shooting at their school, students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s theatre department performed in front of Broadway’s biggest stars to honor their theatre teacher Melody Herzfeld, the 2018 recipient of the Excellence in Theatre Education Award. She gave a moving speech during the show:

And the group of students did a touching-and very impressive-performance of Rent’s "Seasons of Love." They were introduced by Glee and Broadway star Matthew Morrison.

"[Parkland student] Tanzil Philip reached to the Tonys; he wrote the Broadway community showed up in our time of need and brought some much needed light to the dark," Morrison said, referring to Broadway's From Broadway With Love: A Benefit Concert For Parkland, USA show that was put on in April. "He asked to appear on the telecast tonight, give thanks in person and show the world how much this community has changed their lives for the better. Well, Tan, rather than inviting you on stage to say thanks to us, our Broadway family wants to give and say thanks to you by sharing the stage with you and your classmates."
