People are going crazy for the watermelon dress trend

The weirdest crazes can arise from Instagram. Bubbly face masks, leopard print hair and feather brows are just a few that have hit headlines over the past few months.

But the #watermelondress trend is taking off like no other.

All you need to get in on the craze is a watermelon, a knife and a clever little optical illusion.

By placing the sliced watermelon close to the camera lens, it appears as if the person in the background is wearing a fruity garment.

People are carving the tropical fruit into all manner of dress styles from couture-like creations to simpler shapes.

It’s not just women who have taken up the challenge. Men and babies are also sporting their very own watermelon dresses.

Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton was one of the more well-known faces to try out the trend.

Shopping site Lyst has uncovered that searches for watermelon-printed clothing has doubled in the past month with this £75 Lazy Oaf dress proving to be the most popular style.

Watermelon accessories are also being widely searched for with statement bags and phone cases such as this Skinnydip one coming out on top.

There’s no clue as to where the #watermelondress hashtag came from but the 3,500 pictures (and counting) are surely set to cause a watermelon shortage very soon.
