The Perfect Winter Day in New York City, According to New York Metro Weather
Before I leave my apartment each and every morning, I check New York Metro Weather. The weather site—with popular accounts on social media—offers a simple 1 out of 10 rating each day, and a summation of the "vibes" to expect. It's never failed me yet, thanks to John Homenuk's diligent, "no panic" forecasting. Recently, I caught up with Homenuk, the meterologist behind NYMW, to chat all about NYC's winter forecast—and if we'll get any snow this holiday season.
What's a 10/10 winter day for you?
A 10/10 winter day is actually really hard to come by, I’d say! As much as I like to be objective about the ratings, it’s really hard to imagine a perfect day during the winter months, just given the tendency for cold and wind. If I had to pick, though, I’d say a perfect winter day is one that features a fresh snow—a good storm, not a little one —followed by afternoon sunshine on the new snowpack. I love every season, so if it’s going to be winter, I want the whole deal. Bring me the blizzards!
What's the worst type of winter day?
Man, I feel like those days when it’s in the 30s or 40s and raining are just the worst. Dreary, dark, damp and wet. Gross.
What's your favorite winter activity in New York City?
I really love enjoying a good coffee in a coffee shop on a cold day, it’s so comforting. Also, red wine and an Italian meal on a cold day at one of the many amazing spots in the city (hello Lil Frankie’s, Bar Primi, and Altesi) sounds amazing right now.
What do you do on a snow day?
Usually if it’s a snow day, I’m busy working! But if I can get out, I love a good walk in the snow. There’s something so peaceful about it; it’s quiet, calm, and beautiful—especially right after the snow stops.
Can you share a preview of your winter forecast with us?
If I had to use one word to describe it, it would be “volatile.” I think there will be periods of warm weather, but unlike the past few winters, the early indication I’m getting is that we could have some big swings in temperature at times, and perhaps the chance for a few larger winter storms... We will see!
