Photographer exposes people’s undercover tattoos in ‘Covered’ photo series
There used to be a stigma around tattoos. I’m not talking about those tiny, line tattoos that are so popular right now or even the Asian character tattoos everyone got back in the late ‘90s. I’m talking sleeves of tattoos, typically associated with sailors, bikers or people who have spent some time in jail. But that’s all changed.
Walk down the street of most major cities you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t have a tattoo, let alone an entire canvas of colourful ink. Aware of this, photographer Alan Powdrill took to the streets of England to find subjects for an exhibition called “Covered.” Previewing in London on Nov. 11, the collection of images reveals unexpected canvases of tattoos found under the clothes of unassuming Britons. You have to see it to believe it.
“Good tattoos aren’t cheap, cheap tattoos are not good,” say Izzy, a 48-year-old model from Kent featured in Powdrill’s photos.
