Piers Morgan doubles down on Meghan row with April Fools' Day tweet

Piers Morgan fans were left suspecting an April Fools’ Day joke after the presenter announced he was returning to Good Morning Britain.

The TV star stepped down from the ITV show last month after sparking a controversy when he said he did not believe comments made by Meghan Markle in her Oprah Winfrey interview, which included claims about her mental health and racism within the Royal Family.

But taking to Twitter on 1 April, he said the “nation’s prayers have been answered” and that he's been offered his job back.

Morgan also referred to the confusion over Markle’s claim that she and Prince Harry were married by the Archbishop of Canterbury three days before their official Royal wedding.

“UPDATE,” he tweeted.

“Following the Archbishop of Canterbury's confirmation that Meghan Markle was talking a load of old flannel in her Oprah interview, ITV just offered me my @GMB job back & I've decided to accept.

“The nation's prayers have been answered.”

“See you Monday!” he added.

Many fans seemed sure Morgan’s message was an April Fools’ joke, but there were plenty hoping he was telling the truth.

“I hope this is true but more likely to be April Fools,” one person posted on Twitter, while another tweeted: “If this is an April fools I’m never talking to you again Piers Morgan!!!!!!”

“Obviously an April Fool joke but @piersmorgan has just increased @GMB ratings on Monday morning with people tuning in expecting to see him!” said another.

During her interview with Winfrey, Markle said she and Prince Harry married in their “backyard” three days before their televised wedding, in a ceremony officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

However, the General Register Office later revealed that the couple’s wedding certificate is dated May 19, 2018 – the date of the public ceremony at Windsor Castle.

And in an interview with Italian publication La Repubblica, the Archbishop indicated that the legal wedding was on the Saturday.
