Pink might be an 'unexpected' choice for 'Most Beautiful' — but she deserves it

People magazine debuted its 2018 Beautiful Issue on Wednesday with a gorgeous cover of singer Pink and her children — Willow Sage, 6, and Jameson Moon, 15 months. The 38-year-old songstress, whose legal name is Alecia Moore, admitted to laughing at the prospect of being the face of the issue when she appeared on The Ellen Degeneres Show. However, the self-proclaimed “outcast” is actually the perfect person for the spot.

Since the singer’s speech at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards, where she spoke up about the stereotypes surrounding beauty and how they’ve started to affect her young daughter, the mother of two has been opening up about how she’s raising her children to be nonconforming. From pointing out she’s been made fun of herself for being “too strong” or “too masculine” to creating an open and accepting environment at home, Pink is careful not to give in to a standard of what beautiful is supposed to look like. And while some may think it’s unconventional, it’s exactly why she’s such a powerful role model.

Within the publication’s cover story, Pink explains how being a parent has helped to broaden her own definition of beautiful by making it label-free, and how she and her husband, Carey Hart, have integrated that into their home. Although she herself wouldn’t really call it gender-neutral, she tells the mag, “it’s whatever floats your boat.”

“I believe that a boy can do anything. So I have boys that flip dirt bikes and I have boy friends that wear dresses. It’s all okay to me,” she said. “So that’s the kind of house that we live in.”

And while being so outspoken has snagged her the cover of this popular issue, she admits that her free-range expression has not always won over crowds.

“You’re not always going to be popular when you’re a woman with a lot of opinions, and you don’t back down, and you don’t apologize,” Pink explained. “It’s hard for people, but I’m okay with it because I like me.”

The seemingly unexpected choice of Pink as the frontrunner of the Beautiful Issue coincides with the publication’s announcement that the edition has officially been renamed from it being formerly known as the Most Beautiful Issue. According to People’s statement, the renaming was done “to make clear that the issue is not a beauty contest,” but instead will highlight the beautiful qualities of strong, powerful women and men, just like Pink.
