The Crown's season 3 will feature a young Prince Charles meeting Camilla Parker Bowles for the first time as the third instalment focuses on the early days of their romance.

Netflix has yet to officially confirm who has been cast as Camilla - but images leaked from the filming appear to reveal that Call the Midwife's Emerald Fennell stars as the future royal, opposite The Durrells actor Josh O'Conner, who was confirmed as playing Charles earlier this year.

Fennell's acting credits also include The Danish Girl, Anna Karenina, and Any Human Heart. The 33-year-old has also taken over screen-writing duties from Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Killing Eve's anticipated season two.

Jodie Comer, who stars as Villanelle in the acclaimed drama, recently revealed that she was "initially worried" about how the series could equal the brilliance of the first one without Fleabag's Waller-Bridge.

But she assured fans that Fennell completely "understands the tone of the show", telling Harper's Bazaar UK: "Emerald is so brilliant and also a very close friend of Phoebe's. They have a very similar sense of humour and Emerald really understands the characters and the tone of the show."

She added: "When we started working on scripts and rehearsing, it was clear that we were in safe hands. I've been really excited by the script, and where the characters go."

Meanwhile, the scene being reimagined in The Crown dates back to a polo match in 1975 where Charles and Camilla were reportedly just friends after their relationship came to an abrupt end when Charles joined the Royal Navy in early 1973.

The pair were originally introduced by mutual friend and Charles' former flame Lucia Santa Cruz in 1971, and Charles and Camilla regularly met at polo matches at Smith's Lawn in Windsor Great Park, where Charles played polo.

Royal biographer Robert Lacey claims in his book Royal: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth I that Charles met Camilla too early, and that he hadn't asked her to wait for him when he went overseas for military duties.

The upcoming series of The Crown also sees Olivia Colman taking over from Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth; Helena Bonham Carter replacing Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret; and Tobias Menzies taking on the role of Prince Philip, previously played by Matt Smith.
