Police issue traffic advisory ahead of UK football season opener, Labor Day weekend

The Lexington Police Department issued a traffic advisory ahead of what is expected to be a busy Labor Day weekend that includes the University of Kentucky football season opener Saturday.

UK plays Ball State at noon Saturday at Kroger Field, and personnel from the Lexington Police Department will be helping with traffic before and after the game, police said in a news release Friday afternoon.

The police department urged people traveling in the area Saturday to be careful and be prepared for heavy vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

“Please follow all directions given by officers and obey all posted traffic signs and signals. Pedestrians should also follow all directions given and posted signage,” police said in the release.

The police department will also be restricting parking around campus because of the game.

From 6 a.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Sunday, there will be no parking on Crescent Avenue, State Street, University Avenue, Forest Park Road, Floral Park and Elizabeth Street from Waller Avenue to Conn Terrace and Elizabeth Street from Waller to Floral Park.

Vehicles violating the no parking zones will be towed.

A Lexington police spokesperson said Lexington police will work with the UK Police Department to restrict parking “as needed” for each home game this season.

Police said parking in yards is also prohibited and will be enforced along with all other parking ordinances.

And they emphasized the importance of avoiding driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

“We want everyone to have a safe Labor Day Weekend,” Lt. Jeremiah Davis, of the police department’s traffic section, said in the release. “There are several events in Lexington this weekend, and we are asking drivers to allow extra time to make it to their destination and use caution while driving.”
