Grab a banana on your way out the door this morning? That may be part of the reason why you can’t seem to drop those last five pounds.
“Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25 per cent sugar and moderately acidic,” Dr. Daryl Gioffre, creator of the AlkaMind diet tells Byrdie.
While bananas are known for being a good source of potassium, magnesium and fibre, Gioffre points out that they’re also packed with sugar. Even though this is a natural sweetner, it causes sugar levels in the body to spike.
“They’ll give you a quick boost, but you’ll soon be tired and feeling hungry,” he says.
Gioffre warns that you should never eat a banana alone or immediately after a meal as it can lead to increased cravings and feelings of fatigue.
But what if you really love bananas? Not to worry, you don’t have to completely eliminate them.
Gioffre suggests pairing bananas with a healthy fat or spice that will help neutralize the acids and slow down how your body metabolizes the sugar.
“Because bananas are acidic, you’ll have to neutralize the acid to get the benefits of potassium, fiber, and magnesium without the sugar rush,” he says.
Time to grab some almond butter and cinnamon to go with that banana!
