Kenya Moore is opening up about the potentially dangerous reason her feet have swollen so much during pregnancy.

The 47-year-old star of “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” is currently pregnant with her first child with husband Marc Daly. Moore shared a photo of her swollen appendages to Instagram and revealed doctors are concerned she has developed preeclampsia, a high blood pressure disorder that limits blood flow and nutrients to the fetus.

“I made fun of my swollen feet at Cynthia Bailey’s party. Next day my tests came back for possible preeclampsia,” Moore wrote. “I gained 17 lbs in ONE week due to severe swelling and water retention, high blood pressure and excess protein in urine.”

Although the exact cause of preeclampsia is unknown, the condition can impact fetal growth and result in preterm birth. In severe cases, stillbirth and infant death can occur as a result of pregnancy complications such as the placenta separating from the uterine wall (placental abruption) resulting in heavy internal bleeding.

Symptoms of preeclampsia include high blood pressure, swelling in hands, face and feet, headache, blurred vision and upper abdominal pain.

Fortunately for Moore, tests revealed that the baby is still healthy but are monitoring her health closely. The former Miss America winner writes, “If (tests) come back higher, Baby Daly will have to come same day.”

In Canada, gestational preeclampsia affects approximately 7 per cent of pregnancies. Cases of preeclampsia can progress quickly from mild to severe, and pose serious risk for both mother and child. A preeclampsia diagnosis can result in kidney, liver and possible brain damage, and in some cases, can lead to organ failure or stroke.

Often, if the pregnancy has progressed past the point of 37 weeks, doctors will recommend early delivery to avoid further complications.

Moore says she is “staying positive” and urges her followers to be diligent about their health.

“To my pregnant sisters please go to your visits and tell the doctor of any drastic changes,” she wrote. “Thank God I have great doctors.”
