The U.S. House of Representatives has elected Mike Johnson (R-LA) as its new speaker, CNN reported on Oct. 25.
A political ally of Donald Trump, Johnson is known for his opposition to U.S. support and military aid to Ukraine.
Johnson received almost unanimous support from the Republican party – garnering 220 votes, which allowed him to surpass Democrat Hakim Jeffries' 209 votes.
In 2023, Johnson voted against a Ukrainian aid package, claiming, "we should not send another $40 billion abroad when chaos reigns at our border, American mothers are barely finding food for their babies, gas prices are at record levels, and American families can hardly make ends meet — and there's insufficient control over where the money will go.”
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on a $100 billion package of U.S. aid to Ukraine and Israel, proposed by the White House, in the coming weeks.
