When Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer were married, on July 29, 1981, they had an audience that reportedly included 750 million viewers worldwide. And while the union was one of the most watched events of its time, it’s one major moment that’s not recreated in the upcoming fourth season of The Crown. That may be a missed opportunity for viewers who don’t recall the day themselves, but for those of us who woke up early to watch every minute, the real thing still plays on repeat in our minds.

“I must have just been transfixed by the news coverage and, of course, Diana’s superlatively poufy gown, which was tailor-made for maximum appeal to dramatic little girls,” says Jessica Morgan, half of the fashion writing duo Go Fug Yourself. Her partner Heather Cocks adds, “My earliest memory of the wedding—and specifically the Dress—was being about six and poring over our Chuck & Di coffee table book. My dad also bought a wastebasket that had the engagement photo print- ed on it. It still sits in my mom’s guest bathroom.”

Simon Doonan, author of the recent How to Be Yourself, recalls, “Back then I was designing windows in Los Angeles for Maxfield, and since I was a Brit, my boss expected me to pull out all the stops. Naturally, I obliged: I created a kitsch homage to the royal couple, using lookalike masks from Hollywood Toys and Costumes and tacky party decor.”
