With Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding just months away, royal watchers are guessing the type of gown Markle will wear, what flowers will grace sconces at St. George’s Chapel and who Prince Harry will choose for his best man.

And when it comes to accessories, people are wondering what kind of wedding band Markle will choose to complement her engagement ring. But choosing a ring may not even be a problem for her fiancé.

Reports say that he may follow in the steps of his grandfather Prince Philip and brother Prince William, ditching a wedding band all together. While it may raise some eyebrows, the reason to go ringless isn’t because of a royal rule — it all comes down to personal preference.

Prince William, who married the Duchess of Cambridge nearly seven years ago, has never worn a wedding band — all due to his distaste for jewels.

“He doesn’t like jewelry, and the Palace issued a statement before their wedding saying so,” author Penny Junor told Vogue.

British and European royal expert Marlene Koenig says that Prince William — and Harry if he chooses to ditch the wedding band — are making an old-fashioned choice. Koenig said the trend of men wearing wedding bands is a newer one, with the recent statistic that 90 per cent of British men expect to wear wedding bands after their nuptials.

“In the U.K., it is a modern tradition that men have adopted wearing a wedding ring,” Koenig told Town and Country. “But it’s not all that common among the aristocracy. Former prime minister David Cameron does not wear a wedding ring.”

When it comes to royal tradition, wedding bands don’t fall into a specific category, meaning the choice to wear a ring is completely up to the individual.

Whether Prince Harry will be adding a new accessory to his left hand has yet to be confirmed, but with a televised wedding it is highly unlikely his decision will be due to any nefarious activities.
