Prince Harry warned the royals he was writing a memoir

Earlier this week, we learned that Prince Harry is writing a literary memoir about his life, set to cover everything from his childhood to his experiences in the public eye and his life as a husband to Meghan Markle and father to Archie and Lili.

Once the news had broken, the internet - as it so often does - started speculating about how this would further impact relations between Harry and the royal family in the wake of him stepping down as a senior royal and giving a tell-all interview to Oprah.

Online, people mulled over whether or not Harry had given his family prior warning about his memoir, before it became public knowledge.

Well, it seems he did indeed, although out of courtesy rather than necessity.

"Harry spoke privately with the royal family regarding the book's publication very recently, a spokesperson told PEOPLE, adding that he would not be expected to obtain permission from Buckingham Palace for the project.

PEOPLE said Buckingham Palace declined to comment, saying: "Any clarification about the book would be a question for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex."

The book's release was announced on Monday (19 July) by Prince Harry's publisher, Penguin Random House, who described the project as "an intimate and heartfelt memoir", and it's scheduled to hit shelves globally in late 2022.

New father of two Harry has reportedly been writing the book for almost a year, and it's thought that he'll be donating the proceeds to charity.

"I’m writing this not as the prince I was born but as the man I have become. I’ve worn many hats over the years, both literally and figuratively, and my hope is that in telling my story - the highs and lows, the mistakes, the lessons learned - I can help show that no matter where we come from, we have more in common than we think," he said.

Publisher Penguin Random House added in a statement: "Prince Harry will share, for the very first time, the definitive account of the experiences, adventures, losses, and life lessons that have helped shape him."

It continued: "Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story."
