Prince Philip, 97, attends first public event in seven months: Photos

Prince Philip briefly stepped back into the public eye on Tuesday.

The 97-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, whose last official public appearance came nearly seven months ago at granddaughter Princess Eugenie's wedding in October, stepped out alongside his wife, Queen Elizabeth, 93, at the Order of Merit service at Windsor Castle looking happy and healthy.

Philip retired from official public duties at the end of 2017 and has since largely been spotted only riding in cars and at the most special family moments like royal weddings. He did not opt to step out on either Christmas or Easter with the rest of the royal family, though he was photographed arriving at his wife's annual Christmas lunch in December.

Tuesday's outing also marks his first since being involved in a car accident in January that left a woman hospitalized.

Philip and Elizabeth welcomed their eighth great-grandchild on Monday when Meghan Markle gave birth to her first child with husband Prince Harry. In a statement released by Buckingham Palace shortly after the baby's birth, the couple said they were "delighted with the news." Her Majesty was also asked about the family's newest addition on Tuesday -- see her reaction here.
