Prince William and Kate Middleton Secretly Got a New Puppy Last Year, and They're "Besotted"
Last November, royal watchers mourned with Prince William and Kate Middleton, after the royal couple revealed that their faithful English Cocker Spaniel, Lupo, had died. "He has been at the heart of our family for the past nine years and we will miss him so much," the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wrote on Instagram. But what fans didn't know at the time was that the Cambridge family had already welcomed a new puppy into their home—one from Lupo's same bloodline.
Royal reporter Emily Andrews revealed this weekend in the Daily Mail that the royals had gotten an eight-month-old puppy last year, in the hopes of keeping Lupo company. "They were devastated when Lupo passed away, as any dog owner will understand, but got the new puppy before he died," a friend of the couple told the Mail. "It was hoped that a younger dog would give Lupo some company and give him a little more life and energy."
The black cocker spaniel came from a litter bred by James Middleton, Kate's brother and an avowed dog lover. James originally gave Lupo, one of his dog Ella's puppies, to the Duke and Duchess in 2012; he kept Lupo's sister Luna, and she was the mother of the new litter.
"The new puppy is adorable and the whole family are besotted," the friend added. Andrews reports that Will and Kate had the pick of the litter, and that Prince George and Princess Charlotte helped pick out their new four-legged friend (Prince Louis, at just two years old, was apparently too young to help out). The name of the new Cambridge pup has yet to be revealed.
