Why Prince William probably won't be Prince Harry's best man

The furore surrounding Prince Harry’s impending marriage to Meghan Markle just won’t let up.

Now we’ve had the (rough) date and venue confirmed, public attention is turning to who will be included in the wedding party.

And since Prince Harry was Prince William‘s best man, it’s an almost certainty that Harry will repay the favour.

Apparently not, according to one royal expert, because there is no such thing as a best man at a royal wedding.

Turns out William actually broke protocol by calling Harry his best man at his 2011 wedding to Kate Middleton.

Marlene Koenig, British and European royal expert, told Town & Country that “the best man or best men are officially called supporters.”

She did add that “William will probably be Harry’s supporter,” carrying on the sibling tradition that was also displayed by the brothers’ father, Prince Charles. For his wedding to Princess Diana in 1981, he chose his brothers, Edward and Andrew, to be his ‘supporters’.

It’s also likely that William will plan his younger brother’s stag do. Although William’s affair was kept well under wraps, a royal insider told Brides that Harry hosted the occasion “at a country estate about a month before the wedding.”

As for the adorable Prince George and Princess Charlotte? “It is very likely that Prince George and Princess Charlotte of Cambridge will be a page boy and a bridesmaid,” Koenig continued. “Anyone else is a guess.”

Meghan’s bridesmaids are also a mystery. While many expect her A-list friends such as Serena Williams and Priyanka Chopra to be called upon, it’s likely the royal family will want to steer clear of a celebrity wedding.
