Prince William Reportedly Once Broke Up with Kate Middleton Over the Phone
Even Kate Middleton and Prince William aren't immune to a relationship rough patch.
Though it's been reported that the couple split up briefly in 2007 before getting back together and getting married, we haven't heard much about what actually went down — until now.
Royal biographer Robert Lacey has claimed in Battle of Brothers, his new book about William and Harry, that Prince William had broken up with Kate over the phone while she was working as an accessory buyer with London-based clothing retailer Jigsaw.
According to an excerpt from the book in Daily Mail, they split on April 11, 2007, during a one-hour phone call, which Kate took in a private room at her office: "She shut the door for more than an hour. When she came out, she was single."
However, the split allegedly only lasted 10 weeks.
"William had found dating difficult, for a start, when a surprising number of young women from his circle turned him down flat," Lacey wrote. Plus, he added, "the prince missed his family — which by now meant the Middleton family."
Just 10-and-a-half weeks later, Lacey reported, they were seen "kissing and dancing closely" at a party in the prince's barracks in Bovington, Dorset.
It was previously reported that the now-Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had broken up after Middleton's family invited Prince William to celebrate New Year's Eve with them. Though he apparently initially accepted, he allegedly changed his mind, as spending the holidays in Sandringham with Queen Elizabeth is a strict royal tradition, and Kate wasn't able to join him, since she hadn't married into the family yet.
"Well I think to be honest, I wouldn't believe everything you read in the paper but in that particular instance we did split up for a bit," Prince William admitted. "But that was just, we both were very young, it was at university, we were sort of both finding ourselves as such and being different characters and stuff, it was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, and so it was just sort of a bit of space and a bit of things like that and it worked out for the better."
