Yesterday, Prince William launched the Earthshot Prize, an ambitious decade-long project in which £50 million (roughly $65 million) will be granted to those attempting to solve the world's most pressing environmental problems. Each year from 2021 to 2030, five £1 million prizes will be awarded for a total of 50 potential solutions to key issues pertaining to clean air, the restoration of nature, reviving our oceans, fixing our climate, and building a waste-free world.

Today, Barack Obama praised the initiative on Twitter saying, "It’s going to take a lot of big-thinking and innovation to save the one planet we’ve got—and that’s why @KensingtonRoyal’s leadership on climate change can make a real difference."

Per royal reporter Victoria Murphy, Kensington Palace shared that the winners could be selected from “a wide range of individuals, teams or collaborations—scientists, activists, economists, community projects, leaders, governments, banks, businesses, cities, and countries.” They will be chosen by Prince William and a specially-appointed Earthshot Prize Council, with guidance and insight from "a distinguished panel of experts."

This morning, the names of those on the council were revealed to be a group of high profile individuals from a variety of countries. The list includes an astronaut (Naoko Yamazaki), a singer (Shakira), a fellow royal (Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan), and an actress (Cate Blanchett), among many others.
