True to her word, Princess Eugenie arrived at her royal wedding to Jack Brooksbank proudly showing off the scars from her childhood back surgery.

The bride specifically requested that her low-backed gown, designed by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos, reveal the results of the operation she had at age 12, after scoliosis caused a curvature of her spine.

Two 12-inch metal rods were inserted into Eugenie’s back during the eight-hour operation, which took place in 2002.

“I think you can change the way beauty is, and you can show people your scars and I think it’s really special to stand up for that,” the 28-year-old princess has said in the past.

Eugenie’s surgeon, Jan Lehovsky, and staff members from the Royal National Orthopedic Hospital were among the guests at St. George’s Chapel.
