From Town & Country

There's a new period drama on the horizon, and it's got a very promising group of creators behind it. Here's what you should know about The Queen's Gambit, Netflix's upcoming Cold War-set miniseries.

The first full-length trailer has arrived.

The preview introduces Taylor-Joy's character, Beth, as a girl prodigy in the male-dominated world of chess. It also hints at Beth's struggles with addiction, her family history of mental illness, and some lingering emotional scars that threaten to undo her phenomenal success. Watch it in full above.

It follows a previous teaser trailer and preview images.

At long last, viewers are getting a look at what's to come. The teaser trailer hints at the main character's struggle with addiction, and introduces the series' stylish world. The four preview images also center on the lead, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. (Teaser and photos both below.)

It's based on the Walter Tevis novel of the same name.

Some of Tevis's other books, like The Hustler, The Color of Money, and The Man Who Fell to Earth, have already been successfully adapted for the screen; now, The Queen's Gambit's turn. The novel follows Beth Harmon an orphaned chess prodigy from ages 8 to 22, as she tries to become the best player in the world while struggling with addiction.

Anya Taylor-Joy stars as Beth.

Taylor-Joy (of Emma fame) leads the cast, alongside Marielle Heller as Mrs. Alma Wheatley, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Benny Watts, Moses Ingram as Jolene, Harry Melling as Harry Beltik, and Bill Camp as Mr. Shaibel.

Godless's Scott Frank is directing and writing.

Allan Scott (Don't Look Now, The Witches) is a co-creator and executive producer alongside Frank, who's known for penning the screenplays for Minority Report, Logan, and more, in addition to his work on Netflix's feminist Western Godless. William Horberg (The Talented Mr. Ripley, Milk) executive produces alongside Scott.

The show will debut this fall.

Netflix has set October 23 as the premiere date for the miniseries—so might as well block off that weekend now.
