It’s no surprise that brushing your teeth daily is an important part of maintaining your health and wellness - but are you brushing properly?

Despite the recommendation from dentists to brush for at least two minutes twice a day, according to the Academy of Dentistry, the average person only brushes their teeth for 45 -70 seconds once per day. Quip is looking to change that.

In case you haven’t heard of them before, quip is a modern oral health company that designs some of the most stylish toothbrushes around. While they launched in 2015, the brand just improved upon their original electric toothbrush with a new Smart Electric Toothbrush, which aims to help users brush better every day.

I’ve been testing it out for the last week, and had some thoughts about the newest electric brush in town.

First impressions

While I’d heard about quip in the past, I’d never actually taken the plunge and signed up for one of their convenient toothbrush delivery services. As a first-time user, once it arrived at my door I was impressed by the toothbrush’s sleek design and minimal, recyclable packaging that it came in. I found it to be really lightweight, and was also a big fan of the included cover that transforms into a toothbrush holder, or attaches directly to any smooth bathroom surface with its adhesive back.

I received the white plastic version of the Smart Electric Toothbrush, but it does come in a black metal version if you’re looking to avoid plastic in your beauty routine. Starting at $45 USD ($68 CAD) for new customers, it’s definitely more expensive than a drugstore electric toothbrush, but with a replaceable brush head and powerful sonic vibrations, it’s a sustainable option that rivals more expensive options that are on the market.

How does it work?

The Smart Electric Toothbrush uses sensitive sonic vibrations to clean teeth in 30-second bursts, and features an automatic timer that shuts off after two minutes of use. Soft nylon bristles ensure that you’re not brushing too hard, which can damage your teeth and gums, and a single AAA battery is all it takes to power this toothbrush.

While the original Electric Toothbrush contains these same features, the new and improved version is also Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to connect to the quip app to track your brushing and ensure that you’re getting the perfect clean every time.

Featuring tips to guide your technique and monitoring how you brush, the quip app is an easy way to improve your oral health. It also encourages you with ways to improve, and provides incentives for sticking to a good oral health routine - including credits towards your next purchase.

The verdict

Now that I’ve been using my Smart Electric Toothbrush for about a week, I can certainly say I’ve been impressed with its performance. I was a little worried at first about its small brush head, but quickly found that I really liked how it’s able to reach into all corners of my mouth with ease, while leaving behind a really clean and fresh feeling. It also took me a few tries to get used to the short blip that happens between the 30-second timed bursts, initially wondering if I had received a faulty toothbrush. Upon further reading though, I realized that it was doing exactly what it was supposed to.

The fact that you can sign up for a quip subscription that automatically ships you a new toothbrush head every three months is just one of the many reasons that I’m a fan of my new quip smart toothbrush, along with the sustainable aspect of not having to throw a brush out every few months. While I’m still a ways away from my next delivery, I’m already looking forward to my next purchase.
