Marcus Semien’s bet on himself is going to pay off big.

When the former and current American League MVP candidate signed a one-year, $18-million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, he was gambling with his 2021 to determine whether or not it would result in getting that massive contract the following winter.

The 31-year-old’s performance on the field has done that and more, and he reportedly just signed baseball’s most lucrative agent in Scott Boras to represent him in the upcoming negotiations, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Semien’s season was a symbol of consistency. He appeared in all 162 games for Toronto, and led the majors in plate appearances with 724, hit 45 homers, batted in 102 runs, and earned a slash line of .265/.334/.538; all totalling to a 7.1-win season, according to Baseball Reference. Only Astros infielder Carlos Correa brought more to his club among all position players in the AL.

On Thursday, Semien was voted Marvin Miller Man Of The Year by his peers and became one of three Blue Jays in the running for a Gold Glove, alongside José Berríos and Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Fellow teammate and coveted free agent Robbie Ray was also recognized by fellow major-leaguers as the AL's Outstanding Pitcher.

Needless to say, adding Boras to the mix of an elite season must only result in some monumental, record-setting deal for Semien.

For the Blue Jays, dealing with Boras in the past usually meant the negotiations were dead in the water from the start, but they recently signed one of his clients in Hyun-Jin Ryu to a four-year, $80-million deal in 2019.

The good news for Toronto is that Semien has at least expressed desire to stay as Toronto's season wrapped up just one game outside of the AL Wild Card.

MLB free agency opens five days after the World Series, although there might be a slight pause due to the current CBA negotiations.
