The Reverse Cat Eye Makeup Look Is Trending on TikTok

There’s a new makeup trend making the rounds on TikTok and it’s a revamped take on the classic cat eye or winged liner. Enter: The reverse cat eye.

The reverse cat eye look has been around for a while (Kim Kardashian herself famously rocked one at Cannes in 2016 and so did Kristen Stewart in 2017) but its spike in TikTok popularity is thanks to professional makeup artist Painted by Spencer. In his viral TikTok, Spencer transforms a dark eyeliner into an intensely smoky under-eye look that has everyone inspired to recreate it.

Despite looking super glam, achieving a reverse cat eye is surprisingly simple. Spencer posted an in-depth tutorial for his signature reverse cat eye on YouTube back in March, but it's his viral TikTok that has got everyone talking. The only tools required are a small brush and pencil liner. It follows the same steps as your regular cat eye or winged eyeliner, but on your lower lash line instead of its usual eyelid placement. You simply need to sweep your pencil liner along your entire lower lash line and smudge it out with a brush – just be sure to wing out your liner at the outer corner to create the "reverse" or "upside-down" effect. The final step is blending out the entire look until you’ve reached your desired level of glam and it’s blown out to perfection – and don't forget mascara on your lower lashes and a pair of falsies!

Don't be shy about playing around with different variations of the trend and making it your own, either. Think of experimenting with primary pops of color like a fiery red or an electric blue. If you’re looking for a more everyday alternative, tone down the intensity by using a brown liner instead of black. And, on the contrary, switching to a shimmer shade like gunmetal or a dark bronze is the perfect way to add an extra Y2K-worthy glow for an evening event. Last year, the "fox eye" had a firm grip on the makeup trends world despite many criticizing it as cultural appropriation of Asian beauty features. Seeing a new and less problematic trend in town is appreciated.
