From persistent favourites like the Atkins Diet and the Paleo Diet to the controversial Ketogenic Diet and the (kind of gross) Cabbage Soup Diet, these were the top-searched diet trends of 2016.
It’s one you’ve probably heard of before — the South Beach Diet has been a favourite for years, so it’s no surprise it continues to make Yahoo Canada‘s top searches almost yearly. The diet, which was created in 2003 by cardiologist Arthur Agatston (and named after the luxe Miami neighbourhood), is basically a modified low-carb diet.
While it encourages weight loss, losing weight quickly isn’t the main point — it’s moreso about creating a healthy, balanced lifestyle. According to the Mayo Clinic, “The South Beach Diet is lower in carbs (carbohydrates) and higher in protein and healthy fats than is a typical eating plan. But it’s not a strict low-carb diet, and you don’t have to count carbs.” Think a breakfast of eggs and smoked salmon, a lunch of salad with shrimp and a dinner of grilled pork. Oh, and dessert lovers, this one may be for you. It encourages health-conscious dessert items in moderation, like ricotta cheesecake. Yum.
