Rihanna Wore So Many Shrugs Back in 2005

Trust us when we say that Rihanna could convince us to wear almost anything. Back in May, her quarantine catsuit inspired our own fancy, indoor outfits, and aside from her ability to turn a wine glass into an accessory, she's also pointed us in the direction of cute flask bracelets.

The singer and designer's fashion influence is nothing new. We've been taking cues from her for years — which is probably why we wore some extremely questionable items back in 2005.

Right when Rihanna first exploded onto the scene, giving us hits like "Pon de Replay," she was an aughts style queen. Her wardrobe consisted of everything we coveted back then: babydoll tank tops, button-up vests, and the good ol' shrug, which was essentially a cropped sweater that sometimes had short sleeves. Later on, Rihanna even appeared in campaigns for the JCPenney's juniors line, Miss Bissou, and soon, we were convinced that skull T-shirts and peasant skirts were the epitome of cool.

Thankfully, we've all moved on since then, but revisiting Rihanna's 2005 fashion choices sure brings back memories. It's time to take a trip back in time — and cross our fingers that some of these items never make a comeback.

Rihanna loved cropped sweaters (and shrugs, like the one above), but while this gray option would still be cute today, the long T-shirt turns it into a true fashion throwback.

In 2005, all shirts benefited from the addition of a belt. That was the just rule.

We wouldn't mind if capri-length sweatpants came back around, but we might pass on wearing them with a pair of wedges.

A babydoll top, a denim skirt, cowboy boots, bangles — this was fashion! Teens everywhere definitely took notes.

Suddenly, we feel the urge to purchase some suspenders (...again).

Do not let Rihanna's cropped, sparkly vest distract you from that must-have body chain.

The low-rise, pleated skirt was basically the bubble skirt's equally-questionable cousin.

Rihanna was always the queen of accessories and shoes. Those large drop earrings! The bejeweled, strappy sandals! They were Sweet 16 essentials.

Is it surprising that Rihanna went on to create Savage X Fenty Lingerie? She even used to coordinate her underwear with her going-out tops.

Leave it to Rihanna to flawlessly combine two of the year's biggest trends: babydoll dresses and sequins. Bonus points for that matching jewelry set.

Pinstripe pants and Converse sneakers were the ultimate early '00s combo. All that's missing is some sort of chain belt.

Should jean capri pants — aka the perfect in-between-weather staple — make a comeback, at least we already know they look great with shests.

We hope Rihanna held onto a few pairs of low-rise jeans. According to TikTok star Addison Rae, we'll all be wearing them in the near future.

Before layering necklaces, we all had that one extra-long chain, which could be wrapped around multiple times and went with every outfit.

Denim jackets have never gone out of style, but they've definitely evolved since this blazer-like, zip-up phase.

We're still unsure if these bottoms qualify as cropped pants or long shorts, but whatever they are, the coolest way to style them was with long boots.
