The London premiere for the second season of The Crown was barking with excitement thanks to some furry cast members taking over the red carpet. All eyes were on a pair of corgis – the Queen’s beloved breed of dog – who looked determined to make the most out of their time in the spotlight. The four-legged actors were joined by some of their lesser known counterparts, like Claire Foy, Matt Smith and Vanessa Kirby, who play the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Margaret, respectively. Rising star Billy Jenkins, who stars as a young Prince Charles, was even more interested in playing with the pups than posing for photos, and we don’t blame him!
While the real Queen and Prince Philip are off celebrating their 70 th wedding anniversary at Windsor Castle, the cast of The Crown is gearing up for show’s Dec 8 debut. After watching a 25-year-old Princess Elizabeth struggle to find her footing in the monarchy in season one, the show will now delve into her marital strife with husband Prince Philip and the fallout from political scandal. “One more scandal, one more national embarrassment, and it will all be over,” Claire (as Queen Elizabeth II) declares in one of the featured scenes.
Fans will get to enjoy Claire and Co’s work for one more season before they hand off their royal duties to a new set of actors, including Olivia Colman who will take over the role of the Queen. Matt Smith’s replacement has yet to be announced. The show’s creator Peter Morgan always planned to shake up the cast as the series explored different decades of Her Majesty’s long and glorious reign.
While Claire is sad to step down from the throne, the Golden Globe winner admitted to People how excited she is to take on new roles. “As an actor, there’s nothing worse than the sound of ‘seven years.’ I’m sure to some people it sounds amazing, but to us it’s like, seven years of playing the same person? And this is a tough job, you know?” said the actress, who is currently hard at work filming the Neil Armstrong biopic First Man opposite Ryan Gosling.
