If you're team Popeyes in the raging Chicken Sandwich Wars, the latest news about your favorite entrant will make that delicious, crispy chicken item even more satisfying. Popeyes has announced that it will be upgrading all of the chicken products on its menu by removing the bad stuff you'll usually find in fast food. That includes artificial preservatives and antibiotics, which will be eliminated from Popeyes' recipes. The chain has released a checklist of food quality commitments for the next five years, which will go a long way in making their food healthier and more sustainable. The new effort puts Popeyes at the same level as McDonald's, whose similar sustainability goals are well underway. (Related: McDonald’s Is Making These 8 Major Upgrades.)First and foremost, Popeyes is removing antibiotics from their chicken supply chain in the U.S. and Canada by the end of this year. Furthermore, the company will do away with colors, flavors, and preservatives derived from artificial sources from all fried chicken menu items by the end of 2022.Better eggs were also part of the chain's animal welfare and sustainability goals. By the year 2025, the chain will be using cage-free eggs for 99% of all their egg needs globally, which include whole eggs, liquid eggs, egg products, and egg ingredients; by 2030, that percentage should reach 100.Popeyes' packaging is becoming more sustainable, too. Foam cups will be replaced by paper cups, and by the end of this year, all of the chain's fiber-based packaging will be derived from certified forest-friendly or recycled materials. These commitments will allow us all to feel better about heading to their drive-thru several times a week. For the latest on fast-food trends, check out 6 Most Anticipated Fast-Food Menu Items Launching This Year, and don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.
Everyone has their own idea of what "barbecue" is. Though frequently lumped all together, there are actually numerous distinctive styles of barbecue across the nation. While many Americans are celebrating the recent drop in COVID-19 cases, experts continue to warn that things will very likely take a turn for the worse very soon. Why? The new, more transmissible variants are quickly spreading across the country and will soon become the dominant strains of the virus. In a new interview with MSNBC, infectious disease expert Michael Osterholm, Ph.D., MPH makes a startling prediction of what to expect in the next few weeks. Read on to hear what he has to say—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don't miss these Sure Signs You've Already Had Coronavirus. The Expert Warned That the Variants May Result in a New SurgeDr. Osterholm started by explaining why it is so crucial for anyone who can get the COVID-19 vaccine to do so. “We need to vaccinate the world and remember that the variants that we're so concerned about these mutated viruses, even if we vaccinate all of high-income country people, there’s still going to be billions of people left in the low and middle income countries that won't be vaccinated,” he pointed out. “And when they're infected, that's where we're going to see the development of these new variants, which could in fact seriously alter the impact that our vaccines have. So we have a strategic as well as humanitarian need to vaccinate the world. And so every time we see new additional capacity to make vaccines, that's really good news.”He continued to explain why the new variants are so concerning to him, specifically B117, as it was “at 1 or 2 percent of all the isolates are the viruses found in early January” and “today it's in a number of areas, 20 to 30% of all the viruses found in people,” he revealed. “When you look at what happened in Europe, in the Middle East, once that number crossed about 50%, the case surge began.”He predicts this will occur domestically sooner rather than later. “I think we're about two, two and a half weeks away from seeing that happen here in the United States,” he stated. And, while many people believe things are headed in the right direction, “we are actually going exactly the opposite way of what we should be,” he maintains, likening the current situation to “getting really good at pumping the brakes after we wrapped the car around the tree.” “What we're doing is we're giving us a new virus or expansion or spread all the opportunities that it needs to actually spread to many, many more people in this country,” he continued. “We're opening up everything—and I understand why—people see the case numbers coming down. But this is like a hurricane that has been coming at us for the past weeks. Now it's still 150 miles off shore, but it's going to make shore and soon.”RELATED: Dr. Fauci Just Said When We'd Get Back to NormalHow to Stay Safe Now, According to the ExpertThe challenge at this point is, “getting people to take the measures now, before the virus gets here,” he said. “If you look at what happened in Europe, those countries have been in lockdown, complete lockdown, for almost a month and a half, just to try to control this particular virus variant. We're going to find ourselves in a very similar situation in the weeks ahead.”So follow Dr. Anthony Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—wear a face mask that fits snugly and is double layered, don’t travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don't go indoors with people you're not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, get vaccinated when it becomes available to you, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don't visit any of these 35 Places You're Most Likely to Catch COVID.

Some may call it the luck of the Irish, but at the warehouse it's also known as Nuovo Shamrock Ravioli!Yes, we're technically talking about an Italian dish here, but these green-colored ravioli in shamrock shapes are filled with imported Irish aged cheddar. And if you like cheese, you're in luck, because this five-cheese pasta also has creamy white cheddar, parmesan cheese, shredded mozzarella, and velvet ricotta. For dinner, Nuovo suggests pairing it with their chef's recipe for Irish vodka sauce. (Related: Grocery Shortages To Expect in 2021, According to Experts.) After a year of helplessness, I'm now a part of the solution.
If you've found yourself eating from your local fast-food joints more often during the pandemic, you're in the company of millions of other Americans. Fast food was one of the most reliable options for takeout and delivery in 2020, as dine-in restaurants were forced to operate in a limited capacity and, sometimes, shut down altogether.Another reason we've been flocking to the fast-food chains is their reasonable pricing, which often provide the best value meals for cash-strapped families during an economic downturn. But if this has been your main reason for ordering fast food, you may want to rethink your budgeting strategy. According to new government data, fast-food prices have undergone the highest rate of inflation since 2008, and are now much higher than they were a year ago.Data shows that prices at limited-service restaurants skyrocketed by 6.2% year-over-year compared to full-service restaurants (those with wait-staff and dining rooms), which increased by 2.9%. (Related: McDonald’s Is Making These 8 Major Upgrades.)According to Restaurant Business, the price surge can be attributed to higher demand. Fast food drive-thru and delivery options, in particular, saw a surge at chains like Chick-fil-A, McDonald's, and Domino's. Incremental price increases, then, were less likely to threaten the livelihood of those businesses versus full-service businesses, which struggled with a major decrease in customers.Another factor affecting the pricing of fast food is an increase in wages at fast-food restaurants. To retain untipped workers and match higher wages at companies like Walmart, Target, and Costco, chains were forced to raise menu prices.Delivery via third-party apps will also tack on additional charges to a fast-food order. If you get your Chipotle order on DoorDash, for example, you'll pay 13% more than at a Chipotle location. At Noodles&Co., the difference is 15%.According to Restaurant Business's Jonathan Maze, these factors end up making fast-food delivery as expensive as an order from some full-service restaurants. For more on fast-food trends, check out 6 Most Anticipated Fast-Food Menu Items Launching This Year, and don't forget to sign up for our newsletter to get the latest restaurant news delivered straight to your inbox.
