Sarah Hyland shows off her scars in bikini selfie

Sarah Hyland’s latest bikini selfie isn’t what you might expect.

While celebrating the Fourth of July with her friends, Hyland uploaded an Instagram story of her bikini-clad body, with her scars from her 2012 kidney transplant prominently displayed.

Hyland has been transparent about her health history, speaking openly about her experiences with lifelong kidney dysplasia, surgery and hair loss from medication. Her continued honesty resonated with followers on this latest post, too.

“Thank you for being your true self and showing others that we are all beautiful despite our scars and chronic diseases,” commented one follower.

“Love you so much Sarah! Keep being awesome and true to yourself, we love you for that,” added another.

While the actor took a moment to appreciate that not all bodies are airbrushed or Instagram-filtered perfect, she was quick to return to celebrating Independence Day, sharing images of her friends (and dogs!) poolside. Joking about the tedious task of posting group photos, Hyland shared images posing with her besties.

“Here are 4 out of about 150 pictures of us. #4thofjuly #babes (it was a very long, tedious and annoying group chat picking which ones to post),” she captioned the Instagram post.

Hyland’s openness about health and body image is one of the reasons her more than 5.7 million followers keep up with the 27-year-old. For National Selfie Day, she shared an Instagram story snap of herself in hospital after being forced to leave work due to her struggles with kidney dysplasia.

Kidney dysplasia i s a condition that causes the internal structure of one or both kidneys to develop irregularly, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases.

For Hyland, sharing a glimpse of life with this condition may seem like a small effort, but by sharing her experiences and scars, she is empowering others whose bodies share similar markings or – at the very least – don’t look like the ones filling Instagram feeds.
