Seahawks lose starter Damien Lewis to severe-looking ankle injury in preseason game

The Seahawks just realized the worst fears in the preseason for any NFL team.

A starter getting injured, apparently seriously.

Seahawks left guard Damien Lewis went down at the end of running play early in the second quarter of Seattle’s second preseason game against the Chicago Bears on Aug. 18, 2022.

Left guard Damien Lewis went down at the end of a running play early in the second quarter of Seattle’s second preseason game Thursday night, against the Chicago Bears. As the entire Seahawks team massed in the middle of the field near the fallen Lewis, medical personnel inflated an air cast over Lewis’ lower right leg.

A motorized cart took him from the field to the tunnel from which injured players often go to nearby Harborview Medical Center by ambulance.

The Seahawks announced minutes later Lewis was out for the rest of the game with an ankle injury. It may be fractured, given the medical attention he received on the field.

Coach Pete Carroll said this month he believes his team has three starting-caliber guards. Phil Haynes will now get his chance to prove his coach correct. The Seahawks’ fourth-round draft choice in 2019 now seems likely to begin this season with veteran Gabe Jackson as Seattle’s starting guards.

Seattle was trailing the Bears 10-0 in the second quarter when Lewis got hurt.
