Teen's Dying Wish to Be Buried in Pink Princess Dress Comes True

In a heartbreaking story, a 14-year-old who lost her battle with bone cancer last Friday was granted her dying wish.

Cassandra Barbour was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in May after doctors found a cancerous tumor covering 90 percent of her right hip. Despite intensive chemotherapy, Cassandra’s condition did not improve. With a terminal diagnosis, she wanted nothing more than to be buried in a dress she fell in love with over the summer on a trip to Goodwill with her family.

“She tried it on, and it was just stunning on her,” Lisa Eskew, Cassandra’s grandmother, told ABC 13 News. However, she chose not to purchase the dress at that time.

With the teenager’s unpromising prognosis, Cassandra’s family began searching Goodwill stores for the exact gown of her dreams and launched a social media manhunt to see if anyone could help.

While they weren’t able to find the exact dress, their quest was successful. Seamstress Karen Despot happened to see the post and re-created the pink tulle gown. “She wanted to be buried in this dress. How can you not respond when you’re a seamstress and you have the God-given talent to do this?” she told ABC.

After two days of hard work, Despot delivered the dress to Cassandra’s loved ones. “It means the world to us, and it means the world to Cassandra,” Eskew told ABC of Despot’s gift. “She was a princess, and she deserves a princess dress.”

Cassandra will be buried in her princess gown on Tuesday.
