Selma Blair Knew She Was Making a Statement at the 2019 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

It may have come as a major reveal back in 2019, but before Selma Blair stepped out on the red carpet at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party with a cane and cape, she knew that she'd be making a huge statement about her multiple sclerosis diagnosis. In a new interview with Town & Country, Blair said that she knew that she'd become the face of MS with that singular moment — and she wasn't going to take it lightly.

"It was a no-brainer, and there was no choice," she said of choosing to take her cane with her to the event. T&C notes that the glamour and glitz of a monogram and rhinestones were optional, but also a reflection of Blair's attitude and spirit.

"I hadn't been on a red carpet for so long, and now I was coming. I knew, since my diagnosis, people might be watching," Blair added. "I didn't know if I would be forgotten about and be the last one on the red carpet."

Since revealing that she was diagnosed with MS in October 2018, Blair has been open about her treatments and the ups and downs that go with them. On Instagram, she shares images of her horse, Mr. Nibbles, moments in the pool with her son, and offers insight to how she's feeling. She even shared her hair loss after chemotherapy.

Friends, such as makeup artist Gucci Westman and fellow Cruel intentions alum Sarah Michelle Gellar, spoke about Blair's spirit.

"We have one of the purest friendships I have ever had. We're able to be scared, to feel the highs and lows. Between Covid and her diagnosis, a lot of the barriers that we put up have been broken down. [Before the pandemic,] if she was having a bad day I would come over and crawl into bed with her, and we would lie there for hours and watch HGTV," Gellar said. "We didn't have to talk, and to me, real friendships are when you can sit in silence and know that the other person is there to love and support you."

And as Blair reflected on her own feelings and attitude toward her fight with MS, she said that she'll never let it stop her from feeling good — and looking good.

"I don't mind if my muscles get caught at the intersection of a slow brain signal," she said. "I just want those words to come from lips covered in Chanel gloss."
