Serena Williams Paid Tribute to Flo-Jo In a One-Legged Catsuit

From one legend to another.

Serena Williams just bodied her first match at the 2021 Australian Open — and did it in an asymmetrical catsuit, inspired by another sports icon: Flo-Jo.

On Sunday, Williams defeated Laura Siegemund 6-1/6-1 while wearing an asymmetrical black, pink, and red unitard with one full-length and one bike short length leg.

Williams told reporters the Nike outfit was inspired by track star Flo-Jo, who wore similar outfits during her races.

"I was inspired by Flo-Jo, who was a wonderful track athlete, amazing athlete when I was growing up," Williams said. "Watching her fashion just always changing, her outfits were always amazing. This year we thought of 'What can we do to keep elevating the Serena Williams on the court?' The Nike team actually thought of this design of inspiration from Flo-Jo. I was like, oh my God, this is so brilliant."

This year, Serena's sister Venus is also playing the Australian Open, as is Naomi Osaka.

"This was a good start. Definitely vintage 'Rena,'" Serena, a seven-time Australian Open champion, said after her win. "It's definitely good. I think I'm pretty good at pacing myself in a grand slam."
