Serena Williams may seem superhuman on the tennis court, but she harbors the same fears as other parents.
In a new interview in The Guardian, the four-time Olympic gold medalist answered a round of questions about her personal life, including her greatest fear: “Not being there, and around enough, for my daughter.”
Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, are parents to a three-year-old girl named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., who in The Guardian interview, Williams calls the “greatest love” of her life. The 39-year-old tennis star often shares social media photos of her daughter — who goes by Olympia — that show the pair’s affection for each other. “We’re not spending a day apart until she’s eighteen,” she once joked during a Vogue interview.
The little girl is already taking after her mom by finding her footing on the tennis court. “Turn, back, reach, head, follow through,” Williams captioned a recent Instagram photo of young Olympia with a racket in her hand.
Olympia also has her own Instagram account (managed by mom and dad), where other mother-daughter moments can be found.
Williams, who recently launched a luggage collection with suitcase company Away, has been candid about the struggles of motherhood. “"As an athlete, you can't be vulnerable. You have to be strong," she told TODAY Parents in 2020. "As a mom, you're completely vulnerable to everything. And that's what makes it scary."
Elsewhere in The Guardian interview Williams shared the trait she deplores most in herself (“being too busy”), the best kiss of her life (with Ohanian at their 2017 wedding), her most prized possession (“My Bible”) and her most embarrassing moment — if one existed. “I don’t get embarrassed,” she told the outlet.
When asked what keeps her awake at night, she answered simply, “My daughter.”
