As one council member steps down, another needs to be voted in to fill their place.
On Sept. 19, shíshálh Nation announced one of its council members, Shain Jackson, will be stepping down from his role due to personal reasons.
“We are truly grateful for hihiwus niniwum Salepem, Shain Jackson’s dedication and contributions during his time with our Nation,” said lhe hiwus yalxwemult (Chief Lenora Joe) in a press release from the Nation.
“niniwum Saleem’s passion and hard work have left a deep-entrenched mark, and while we are sad to see him go, we are hopeful with time, he will begin his healing journey and continue to fight the Indigenous battle as he has always done. niniwum Salepem has been an asset; his presence and passion will be truly missed. We wish him every success in his future endeavors and are very excited to work with him through Golden Eagle Rising,”
The coming by-election will determine who the next shíshálh nation council member will be.
All by-election events will take place at the shíshálh Nation community hall important dates for the election are as follows:
The nomination meeting will be held on Oct. 4, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The all candidate meeting will be held on Oct 16. From 6 to 8 p.m.
The advanced poll date will be held on Nov. 12 from 2 to 6 p.m.
The election day will be Nov. 18, votes can be cast from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The notice of by-election from the nation includes, “Copies of the shíshálh Nation Constitution and shíshálh Nation Election and Referendum Law can be obtained at the shíshálh Nation's Administration Building and electronically on shíshálh Nation's website at: shishalh.com or contact: Communications Manager Julia Cook (email@example.com).”
