Shane Beamer has message for naysayers not happy with USC win over Jacksonville State

Shane Beamer walked into the press conference after the 38-28 win over Jacksonville State happy but motivated. It was the first time in a while that South Carolina’s head coach didn’t have to deal with a disappointed locker room, but it still wasn’t USC’s best game.

It had been 42 days since the Gamecocks (3-6) had won a game, that victory dating back to the Sept. 23 win over Mississippi State.

Here are some takeaways from Beamer’s postgame press conference following Saturday’s win.

Injury updates

Beamer said Dakereon Joyner sustained an ankle injury during the game, but doesn’t know anything beyond the initial injury.

“We’ll see (Sunday) how significant it is,” Beamer said. “Don’t know the prognosis for that. It shouldn’t be too long.”

Jakai Moore, Mario Anderson and Hunter Rogers all left the game at various points with minor injuries, including Anderson’s shoulder, but all returned. Beamer said he believes those players should all be fine.

Beamer’s message to naysayers

Beamer wished Jacksonville State for the rest of their first season at the FBS level.

“That’s a team that probably won’t lose a game the rest of the year. They were 7-2 for a reason.

“We’ve got to be a lot better. We really made it hard on ourselves at times today. Certainly there’s a lot to clean up. I was writing things down during the game and ran out of paper with all the issues that we had, and that starts with me. We’ve got to be a lot better down the stretch than we were here today.

“We are going to celebrate the heck out of this game, and we just had one heck of a celebration in that locker room. Our guys are super excited and dancing their butts off.

“There are going to be people that live a miserable existence that are gonna say, ‘Why are you celebrating a 10-point win over Jacksonville State?’ Well, that’s why you’re not on a team. That’s why you’re not in a locker room.

“Our guys work really, really hard during the week. We know we need to be better, starting with me. I thought we coached poorly today in a lot of ways. We’ll be better.

“This game is too hard and we get 12 guaranteed Saturdays and these kids work their freakin’ butts off. Proud as heck of them to find a way to win with a lot of the mistakes we made.

“When we win, we’re going to celebrate it. That’s what we did today. ... That is one happy locker room. It’s been a while since we had a win. We’re certainly going to enjoy this one.”
