Shania Twain opens up about her ‘beautifully twisted’ marriage to 2nd husband after their spouses had an affair

It’s the stuff of country music: Woman discovers that her husband is cheating on her with a close friend, gets a divorce and then remarries — this time to the man who was once wed to her cheating spouse’s mistress.

That’s just what happened to Shania Twain, and the 54-year-old country star is opening up about it all in the February/March issue of AARP The Magazine.

“There were days I didn’t really care if tomorrow came,” Twain told the magazine of the depression she experienced over being blindsided, in 2008, by the affair first husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange had with her friend and personal assistant, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. Thiébaud’s then-husband, Frédéric Thiébaud broke the news of the relationship shortly after Lange, Twain’s producer and co-writer, told the singer he wanted to end their 14-year marriage.

In a development that Twain now calls “beautifully twisted,” she and Thiébau went on to marry in 2011 after divorcing their spouses, the infidelity having brought them closer together.

“Survival is everything,” the “You’re Still the One” singer told AARP the Magazine of her eventual but unexpected happy ending. “I was in quicksand. I panicked, like everybody does, but I didn’t surrender. I found a way out.”

The interview also sees the star opening up about her budding acting career and feeling more body-confident as she ages.

“I’m more comfortable with my body now than I was when I was younger,” she shared. “It was really a struggle back then. But with age, you ask: ‘OK, how many more years do I have to live, and do I really want to live them feeling negative about myself and the things I can’t change?’”
