Shannen Doherty Makes Chelsea Handler Cry While Talking About How Cancer Has Changed Her
Shannen Doherty just gave her most in-depth interview yet about dealing with breast cancer. The 90210 star has long been open about her treatment and sharing her story online, and recently sat down with Chelsea Handler on her Netflix show, Chelsea, for an interview that was so emotional even Handler had to hold back tears.
Doherty told Handler that she first had a hard time dealing with her new appearance, since treatment made her lose her hair, her eyebrows, and her eyelashes. "All of a sudden it hit me – I got very insecure, I'm so not who I used to be. And then that kind of put me in a weird spot where I was looking at my husband thinking, he didn't marry this. This is not who he married. He married the girl with the long, beautiful, dark hair," she said. But after going through treatment this whole time, she's realized that the transformation is also emotional, not just physical:
"I think what's beautiful and hard and interesting about cancer is that it tears you down, and builds you, and tears you down, and builds you, and it remakes you so many different times. So the person that I thought I was supposed to be, or was going to be, or who I thought I was six months ago is now somebody completely different. And I realized, wow, I thought I was so brave and so gracious this entire time, but really I was just hiding."
