Shopbop’s Caroline Maguire breaks down the ultimate shopping guide for fall

They say street style reaches a whole tier once fall is in full swing. And as cliché as that sounds, I witnessed this first-hand when I travelled to New York.

While this Canadian editor wore a black satin fringe blouse and wide-leg jeans, the rainy, ‘cold’ city weather brought out unpredictable, yet insta-worthy style pairings of chunky layers, patterns and textures that brought all the outfits I packed to shame. But then again, there wasn’t much to pack — I was only there for a sweet and short trip to celebrate Shopbop’s 20th Anniversary to kick off Fashion Week.

When I thought I saw all the fashion possibilities, the line up just to get into Shopbop’s pop-up told me otherwise. I saw blue denim mixed with black denim, monochromatic ensembles of beiges and browns and reptile prints mixed with jungle animal and Crayola-bright colours. And when I got inside, the shop-bait space easily reflected the online destination’s shopper.

“We’re an online retailer, and so to have it [the pop-up] come to life and witness our fans actually walk into Shopbop and interact with the pieces and how we’ve mechanised them is such a beautiful moment,” says Shopbop Fashion Director Caroline Maguire. “It’s been 20 years and our girls come back to us for colour and print.”

After walking around a dozen times and admiring all the trend themed sections, I sat down to with Caroline to chat about the best trends to shop for the season.

Conservative Shades of Brown

“You’ll see in the store that its all about warm shades of cognac, luggage, and really pretty shades of brown. At Shopbop, we love to do is mix those kinds more of those kinds of conservative colours with like pops of neon yellow, lime green and shocking pink and kind of mixing and matching the two trends together — kind of like a colour blocking idea.”

Animal Instinct

“For print, it’s all about animal. I think what’s new about animal print this season is that it’s all about the coloured animal. Think coloured leopard, printed alligator or croc.”

Slouchy Boots

“We’re obsessed with shoes this season. The direction of shoes for fall is all about the slouchy boot – we love them! Buy it to the knee or even thigh-high and kind of slouch it down to your calf.”

The Modest Dress

“The dress of the season is the modest dress, which you’ll see around the store. It’s that style with the higher neck, bell-sleeves, and its usually as a longer length — max or midi.”

‘90s Denim

“It’s back! The focus is all about rigid washes and higher-waist, fuller lengths from the waist to your ankle, which I think is a comfortable and chic way of wearing denim. We still have our skinnies but we’re putting that to the side in our closet and going after that one-directional fit.”

Levi’s Ribcage Straight Full Length Jeans

Amped-up Earrings

“We also have statement earrings. For jewellery, its all about exaggerated earrings. Think tortoiseshell, hardware, mixed material and colour — the bolder the better!”

Shashi Electra Earrings

Structured Lady Bags

“For bags, its all about box shapes and baguette shapes (think east to west). It’s so fun! When shopping, also consider textures like animal patterns and finishes and even shearling!”

Rebecca Minkoff Luxe Coco Barrel Crossbody Bag

Turtle Power

“You make think, “a turtleneck is a turtleneck”, but there are so many different variations of turtlenecks for the fall season. I love that idea of wearing a turtle neck under a dress or under a chunky sweater or with a jean jacket. There’s also the chunky knit which is great on its own.”

Belt Statements

“You don’t want to discount a belt for the season because we have so many novelty belts. Styling can be like layering two belts over a sweater or wearing it with ‘90s denim. Or even over a coat cinched at the waist.”
