Simone Biles Takes Home the Bronze on Beam

UPDATE 8/3/21 at 8:55 a.m.: Simone Biles has made her comeback and taken home the bronze medal on beam, her seventh Olympic medal, after dropping out of the all-around finals and three of the four individual events. The gymnast, often referred to as the G.O.A.T., received a score of 14.000 on her routine.

"I'm pretty happy," she said at the press conference after the competition. "I wasn't expecting to medal. I just came out here and tried to do a good beam set." She also touched on the importance of mental health, especially for athletes who she says may be feeling similar things to her.

"To bring up the topic of mental health, I think it should be talked about a lot more, especially with athletes because I know some of us are going through the same things, and we're always told to push through it, but we are all a little older now, and we can kind of speak for ourselves," she said. "At the end of the day, we're not just entertainment. We're human, and there are things going on behind the scenes that we're also trying to juggle with, as well, on top of sports."

UPDATE 8/2/21 at 8:45 a.m.: After pulling out from the gymnastics all-around final, Simone Biles will return to compete in the balance beam competition on Tuesday (August 3). She will be joined by her teammate Sunisa Lee, according to USA Gymnastics.

"We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow - Suni Lee AND Simone Biles," the account tweeted. "Can't wait to watch you both!"

UPDATE 7/28/21 at 9:00 a.m.: Simone Biles has withdrawn from individual all-around competition in addition to withdrawing from the team final competition.

"We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritizing her well-being," USA Gymnastics said in a statement. "Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."

UPDATE 7/27/21 at 12:30 p.m.: After the U.S.A. gymnastics team took home the silver, Simone Biles opened up to reporters about why she decided to pull out of the team final competition. "To focus on my wellbeing," she said, per The Daily Mail. "And you know, there's more to life than just gymnastics."

She continued, "It is very unfortunate that it has to happen at this stage because I definitely wanted this Olympics to go a little bit better but again, we'll take it one day at a time and we're going to see how the rest goes. I feel like I'm also not having as much fun — and this Olympic Games I wanted it to be for myself and it felt like I was still doing for other people, and that hurts my heart that doing what I love has been taken away from me."

While speaking with The Today Show, the gymnast revealed the amount of pressure she was facing coming in to the Olympics. "Physically, I feel good, I'm in shape. Emotionally, that kind of varies on the time and moment. Coming to the Olympics and being head star isn't an easy feat, so we're just trying to take it one day at a time and we'll see."

UPDATE 7/27/21 at 10:20 a.m.: Following the team final competition, Simone Biles spoke with reporters saying she was "okay, just dealing with some things internally which will get fixed out in the next couple of days." She added that she plans to return for the all-around final on Thursday. The U.S.A. gymnastic team took home the silver for the team final, and Russia Olympic Committee took home the gold for the first time in nearly 30 years, according to ESPN.

Simone Biles has exited the team finals at the Tokyo Olympics due to a "medical issue." During the team finals, Biles performed the vault, the first rotation for the U.S.A. team. She was supposed to perform the "Amanar," a vault that begins with a roundoff back handspring onto the board, followed by 2 and a half twists, however, Biles only executed one and half twists.

Following the vault, she was seen speaking with her coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landia and a trainer before exiting the floor with a team doctor. Several minutes later the four-time Olympic gold medalist returned to the floor, took her bar grips off, and pulled on her team U.S.A. sweatsuit on after hugging her teammates. Jordan Chiles replaced Biles for the remainder of the team competition.

The U.S.A. Gymnastics organization released the official statement on Twitter.

"Simone Biles has withdrawn from the team final competition due to a medical issue," the statement read. "She will be assessed daily to determine medical clearance for future competitions."

She is qualified to compete in all four of the individual events later in the games, although at the moment, it is unclear if she will.

On Monday, the gymnast opened up on her social media about the pressure that comes along with the Olympics. "I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world on my shoulders at times," she wrote. "I know I brush it off and make it seem like pressure doesn't affect me but damn sometimes it's hard hahaha! The olympics is no joke!"
