Single? Here are five ways you can still enjoy Valentine's Day

Ugh.
Ugh.

It’s what so many romantic comedies are made of: a boy and a girl meet over the holidays, their budding romance thrives until days before Valentine’s Day, and then it’s suddenly over, leaving the couple to fend for themselves when the rest of the world seemingly celebrates love. While some choose not to recognize, or avoid, the pseudo-holiday, others kick their love into overdrive, gifting expensive presents and dropping a lot of cash on fancy meals.

In elementary school we were encouraged to write cards for our classmates, exchanging tiny pieces of folded cardboard and binging on heart-shaped candies — who says your adult celebration has to be any different? While you may not have classmates, you most likely have friends who would be up for an excuse to celebrate and treat themselves. If you’re single and still wanting to celebrate this Valentine’s Day, here are five ways you can recognize the holiday without feeling like you’ll be forever alone.

Treat yourself

They say you can’t truly love somebody else until you love yourself, so treat yourself to something you’ve been wanting for a long time. Whether it’s a new purse you’ve been eying or a one-month yoga membership, show yourself some love by doing something for you. On a budget? This treat could be as simple as picking up your favourite chocolate bar from the grocery store or a bouquet of flowers to brighten up your space.

Plan a date night with your best friends

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romantic love. Take the holiday to celebrate your true soulmates — your best friends. Make a group dinner reservation, go out for cocktails or host a dinner party. One way to avoid feeling alone is to surround yourself with your favourite people, and there’s no better way to feel and share the love than spending time with the people who make you happiest. If you’re feeling especially crafty, make some DIY valentines to give each person who attends your special celebration.

Stay in

Trying to stick to your budget but don’t want to completely ignore the day of love? Plan a special night in. Whether you cuddle up with dessert for dinner in a bath robe and your favourite face mask, or order in delicious take out, spend the holiday celebrating what you love. Even if it’s ice cream and Thai food. If you have a single bestie, invite them over to partake in the at-home celebration.

Schedule some spa time

Want to change your hair colour or need a cut? Make yourself a Valentine’s Day appointment and pamper yourself. If a mani/pedi is more your style, schedule time in and lay back and enjoy the zen of being in a spa. This Valentine’s Day should be all about self love — and a fresh manicure or haircut will far outlast a cheap box of chocolates anyways.

Netflix and chill… by yourself

If you’re the type of person who enjoys alone time, use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to revel in what makes you happiest: your living room couch and favourite Netflix series. You could even set a theme for your at-home viewing night – and don’t just stick to love-inspired ideas. You can cuddle up with romantic comedies, but sometimes the best way to feel better is by binge-watching true crime documentaries or yourfavourite thriller. Make sure to stock up on popcorn and lay out your favourite Netflix and Chill ensemble. We’d recommend something comfortable like a pair of sweats or your coziest PJs.
