Prime minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau met with Pope Francis on Monday — just days after President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and presidential advisor Ivanka Trump made their viral visit to the Vatican on May 24.
While America’s first family were widely criticized for their outfit choices, despite abiding by traditional dress codes, the PM’s wife appeared to have chosen her outfit tactically. Grégoire Trudeau’s style is reminiscent of one of the world’s most popular fashion figures, the Duchess of Cambridge — and it’s likely no coincidence.
For the occasion, Grégoire Trudeau wore a black dress with three-quarter-length sleeves, black heels, and one of Middleton’s signature items, a pillbox hat.
We’re seeing major style components from Kate’s Easter Sunday outfit this year — even Sophie’s demeanor reflects that of the Duchess.
The subject of female dress code while meeting the Pope has been hotly debated as of late, as wearing a veil is in line with the traditional dress code at the headquarters of the RCC.
“Per Vatican protocol, women who have an audience with the Pope are required to wear long sleeves, formal black clothing, and a veil to cover the head,” Stephanie Grisham, the first lady’s communications director, told CNN after the women received widespread backlash.
Grégoire Trudeau, while skipping tradition veil requirements, didn’t seem to garner much criticism.
