Sophie Robinson's easy guide to decorating with blue — and the best rooms to make it shine
Sophie Robinson, House Beautiful’s expert colour columnist, is on a mission to inspire us to bring more colour and pattern into our homes, and this time she's shining a light on the world's most popular colour — blue.
'It's a classic, it never goes out of style,' says Sophie in the latest episode of our Decorate With Confidence video series. Blue is a versatile and much-loved colour when it comes to interior design, and there's a pleasing spectrum of shades to choose from.
Navy hues can often be found replacing dark greys to create dramatic backdrops, and a luxe look can be achieved when used alongside warm metallic accessories and marble surfaces. If you want a lighter look, mid-tone blues work well with natural stone and timber, making it ideal in bathrooms and kitchens, and they work well if you want to inject some colour in pared-back, Scandi spaces.
Blue and white make for the ultimate colour combination to create a classic and clean look, as well as bringing some holiday vibes into the home. It also means you can be more playful when experimenting with pattern, whether that's through wallpaper, upholstery, or flooring.
'Having said that blue is a very easy colour to decorate with, you do need to approach it with a little degree of caution because it can be quite a cold colour, so think about which room you're going to use it in,' says Sophie. 'I think it's really great in south-facing rooms, which already have all that lovely yellow-tinted sunlight oozing in, but in a cooler north-facing room, it may feel a little chilly.'
However, if you want to give your home a boost with blue, opting for a rich cobalt shade will instantly do the trick, and if you still aren't convinced, Sophie will show you the results with her fabulous home office and hallway.
