Spain's Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia Quarantine After Schoolmate Contracts COVID-19
Princess Leonor, the heir to the Spanish throne, and her younger sister, Infanta Sofia only recently went back to school, but after a classmate tested positive for COVID-19, the young royals will now have to quarantine for 14 days.
"Given the detection of a positive case of COVID-19 in one of the students in Princess of Asturias' class, the School Centre has recommended to the parents that the students of the aforementioned class do not attend for the next 14 days," the Royal House shared in a statement over the weekend, according to Hello!
"The Princess of Asturias will follow the regulations and health guidelines imposed in Madrid, as will their Majesties the King and Queen and the Infanta Sofía," the statement said. It has not been publicly confirmed if Leonor and Sofia have been tested for the disease.
Spain is currently having a resurgence of the virus, which some are calling a "second wave." Numbers released on September 7 from the country's health ministry show that country had recorded 49,716 new cases and 237 deaths in one week alone earlier this month.
Leonor and Sofia are hardly the only royals to have been impacted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Notably, earlier this year, Prince Charles and Prince Albert II of Monaco contracted the disease, but have both since recovered. Additionally, public engagements for royal families around the world have been adjusted to adhere to social distancing guidelines and other restrictions due to the global health crisis.
