Starbucks has delighted fans with new menu items this summer and the return of the Pumpkin Spice Latte. But the coffee chain is quietly testing a new menu item. It's cheap and will satisfy regular and customers who are vegan or dairy-free! The new Starbucks vegan cream cheese from Miyoko's is made with cashew milk. It's also only $1.
The Miyoko's Cashew Milk Cream Cheese comes in a 1.5 oz package, Veg News reports. Currently, the vegan option is only available at one location outside of Seattle in Issaquah, Washington. At the rest of the cafes around the country, the only cream cheese available is plain. It costs a quarter less than the vegan alternatives. (While these items are new, here are 8 Grocery Items That May Soon Be in Short Supply.)
The vegan cream cheese comes in two varieties — everything and cinnamon raisin. These two flavors give bagel lovers more options. Starbucks sells plain, blueberry, cinnamon raisin, cheese, onion&garlic, sprouted grain, and everything bagels. The test follows the company's announcement in January that it is committed to sustainability. With that in mind, it is expanding the number of plant-based options available for customers.
"Starbucks aspiration is to become resource positive," chief sustainability officer Michael Kobori says. "This aspiration, coupled with the inside that our customers are looking for more plant-based choices, has inspired the development of exciting and delicious plant-based beverages and food."
The news of vegan cream cheese options comes after Starbucks announced earlier in September that plastic straws are being removed from stores for good. The green straws usually aren't recyclable.
Each drink that used to automatically get a straw and lid now gets a recyclable sippy cup-like lid. Like the Miyoko's Cashew Milk Cream Cheeses, the straw change is part of the suitability shift. All of the alternative milk options available are, too.
The coffee chain first introduced soy milk in 1997. It has since added almond milk and coconut milk. Oat milk landed on the menu earlier this year. The Impossible Breakfast Sandwich made with plant-based sausage did too. Although the vegan Miyoko's Cashew Milk Cream Cheese is only available at one location right now, here are 5 Major Changes You'll See at Starbucks Moving Forward.
