Stefano Gabbana Backtracks on His Lady Gaga Body-Shaming Comments
Lady Gaga delivered an incredible halftime performance at Super Bowl LI, singing some of her best singles while surrounded by hundreds of drones. The halftime show, which drew in about 117.5 million viewers, was met with mostly positive feedback — as the singer avoided making any obvious political statements — but some critics surprisingly had a lot to say about Lady Gaga’s body.
For one costume during her performance, the star wore bejeweled bottoms and a white metal chest pad with crystal accents while singing her hit “Bad Romance” and dancing around the stage. Many people took to social media to body-shame the singer for her appearance, describing her stomach as a “potbelly.”
Stefano Gabbana, co-founder of luxury fashion house Dolce & Gabbana, posted an image of Gaga’s midsection during the performance to his Instagram account and offered his take on the body shaming.

He admitted that he too had criticized the singer at first but realized he was wrong. “I know it’s strange, but finally something real not retouched! The truth, reality. Yesterday I criticized it too, but I though about it and I was wrong!!! #real.”
Many commenters expressed that it was great that he realized and acknowledged his mistake. “I’m happy you realized how wrong it was to criticize her body,” Kim Del Valle wrote. “Beautiful women come in all colors, shapes and beliefs. Lady Gaga was amazing and I was so glad that she didn’t choose to be verbally political, I’m sick of the entertainment industry.”
Another commenter, Suzanne McFayden, reiterated the thought. “You have always shown love and respect through your work for women of all sizes and ages,” she wrote. “I love that you are doing so here and taking responsibility after reflection. This is why you have my customer loyalty. Thank you!”
Others commented that they felt the singer maintains a toned physique, and that the garments she wore during the performance were simply ill-fitting.
“I think it was a poor fit. She looks amazing in her own size, that was lack of good tailoring,” user MarBueno commented. Another person wrote, “She’s extremely fit so I don’t see why anyone should be talking about this at all! Well done Lady Gaga.”
