Step-By-Step Instructions for Making the Cutest DIY Jellyfish Costume
Forget shrill screams and tattered zombies, the scariest thing for busy, stressed-out parents to hear during a frenzied Halloween season is the request from their child to, "pretty please make my costume this year!". Oof. You don't want to disappoint your little pumpkin, but you also don't want to turn on full witch mode and attempt a fashion a costume that will inevitably end up a Pinterest fail, right? Step away from that spiked PSL and take a deep breath. We have some seriously good news: homemade costumes can be easy! And fun! No matter your deftness with a glue gun, you can absolutely construct this adorable use-what-you-have jellyfish costume in less time than it takes to watch any one of these Halloween flicks. How's that for last minute?
All you need to craft this budget-friendly, gender-neutral, age-defying jellyfish look is a clear umbrella, some ribbon and bubble wrap, a glue gun, and a working knowledge of everyone's favorite gorgeously gooey under-the-sea creature. And, the best part: this costume can be used for future Halloweens to come, since most of the effect lies in the umbrella accessory. (For clothing, a white top and white bottom are perfect!)
So why not give it a try? It's unique, uses up some of those extra supplies you probably have lying around the house (you know you don't need all that bubble wrap and extra ribbon!), and is likely the most relaxing activity you'll do today. Plus, you can even have your child help you construct it. And that is a boo-tiful thing indeed.
What you'll need:
Assorted Ribbon in different widths colors and materials
1/2 yard of mesh fabric or tulle
DIY jellyfish costume instructions:
Step 1: Weave the meshy colored fabric loosely under and over the inside spokes of the umbrella and attach with hot glue in a few places to secure.
Step 2: Cut strips of ribbon to the your desired length depending on the height of the costume wearer. We cut ours to about 45” long and cut 33 pieces of ribbon.
Step 3: Cut strips of bubble wrap into different widths about the same length as the ribbon.
Step 4: Hot glue a thin edge of the ribbon or bubble wrap onto the inside edge of the umbrella.
Step 5: Repeat step 4, alternating the ribbons and bubble wrap so it is random.
Step 6: Hot glue a length of ribbon around the outside edge of the umbrella to cover up any sloppy edges of the ribbon underneath.
