In Puerto Rico, the show must go on.

Despite the devastating toll wrought by Hurricane Maria in September, residents are working hard to normalize life. And fashion week — or San Juan Moda, running from Dec. 19 through Dec. 22 at the Old San Juan Casino — is one of the events bringing joy to the community, while simultaneously providing a boost for the local economy.

Internationally known designers like Stella Nolasco, who has dressed the likes of Beyoncé and Issa Rae, will bring her latest collections to the runway. Also among those on the lineup is Giannina Azar, who gained notoriety after Jennifer Lopez wore one of her gowns for the One Voice: Somos Live! benefit relief event she organized with boyfriend Alex Rodriguez.

Local designers such Angel Guzmán, Jaer Cabán, and Eddie Guerrero will also have the opportunity to showcase their talents.

The event is among several efforts meant to give a boost to the island’s economy; others include a fund sponsored by first lady Beatriz Rosselló, to benefit a pediatric hospital in need of incubators for newborns, and a toy drive organized by actress Karla Monroig.

Even three months after the hurricane, more than 45 percent of the island remains without electricity. This event, however, aims to bring a beam of light to the Puerto Rican community.
